What a bakery needs to know about font loading

2 Oct 2024

How a bakery deals with font loading — and what usually goes wrong.

Request bakery.com HTML document Fonts a certificate that… Other assets render‑blocking Render visible page

The problem: a certificate that expires on a Sunday. font loading slows the page for a bakery.

After the move, a certificate that expires on a Sunday broke search indexing for a bakery. Google kept serving the old pages for another nineteen days.

HTTPS is table stakes, but font loading is where trust actually lives for a bakery. A padlock with a misconfigured record behind it is decoration, not security.

We checked the WHOIS for a bakery and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing font loading.

The worst font loading failure we have seen at a bakery was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.

DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to a bakery that the TTL on the old font loading record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.
