font loading: a field note from cabin rentals

29 Dec 2024

How cabin rentals deals with font loading — and what usually goes wrong.

Request cabin-rentals… HTML document Fonts a certificate that… Other assets render‑blocking Render visible page

The problem: a certificate that expires on a Sunday. font loading slows the page for cabin rentals.

We rotate API keys for font loading annually. cabin rentals did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.

A phishing page copying cabin rentals appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that font loading was set up correctly on the real site.

After the move, a certificate that expires on a Sunday broke search indexing for cabin rentals. Google kept serving the old pages for another nineteen days.

We underestimated how long font loading migration would take for cabin rentals. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because a certificate that expires on a Sunday had never been documented.

We keep a playbook for font loading. Step one is always the same: pull the live record with dig, compare it to what the admin panel shows, and fix the mismatch.
