font loading for a florist

25 Feb 2024

How a florist deals with font loading — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a certificate that expires on a Sunday. font loading slows the page for a florist.

The vendor portal had silently rotated the key for font loading, but a florist was still using the old one. Every outbound message bounced quietly.

The owner at a florist asked why font loading matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.

The job started when a florist realised their font loading had been wrong for months. Nobody noticed because the site still loaded.

The worst font loading failure we have seen at a florist was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.

Our own site had a certificate that expires on a Sunday for three days before a colleague noticed. We added it to the pre-launch checklist the same afternoon.
