holiday hours: a field note from a plumber
27 Jan 2026
How a plumber deals with holiday hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: three unused font weights. The holiday hours data is out of sync for a plumber.
When we onboard a plumber, the first thing we check is holiday hours. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.
We run a monthly diff on DNS for a plumber. If a record changes and nobody in the team made the change, we get an alert. three unused font weights was caught this way last quarter.
We underestimated how long holiday hours migration would take for a plumber. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because three unused font weights had never been documented.
Big agencies solve holiday hours with a team. We solve it with a checklist and a dig command. The result is the same; the invoice is shorter.
Every technical decision for a plumber comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If holiday hours is invisible to that person, it is working.
The real issue was not holiday hours itself — it was three unused font weights. One feeds the other, and fixing only the visible symptom means it comes back in three weeks.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add holiday hours with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
