How a roofing crew deals with holiday hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: an inbox shared between the office and the webmaster. The holiday hours data is out of sync for a roofing crew.
Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a roofing crew had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct holiday hours.

Nobody at a roofing crew could remember who had configured holiday hours. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.
WordPress can handle holiday hours with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.
The vendor promised a roofing crew that holiday hours was handled. We verified: it was not. Trust but verify has saved more uptime than any product we have used.
