Why holiday hours matters for a restaurant
25 Jan 2026
How a restaurant deals with holiday hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: three unused font weights. The holiday hours data is out of sync for a restaurant.
We rotate API keys for holiday hours annually. a restaurant did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.
Every technical decision for a restaurant comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If holiday hours is invisible to that person, it is working.
We got a call from a restaurant on a Friday. Their holiday hours had expired overnight, and the booking page was returning errors to every visitor.
We check holiday hours for a restaurant once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.
You do not need a status page if you have never gone down. a restaurant is on month fourteen of zero downtime, and the secret is boring: correct holiday hours and a host that does not oversell.
The worst holiday hours failure we have seen at a restaurant was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a restaurant had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct holiday hours.
