A practical look at HTTP to HTTPS for a hardware store
8 Nov 2024
How a hardware store deals with HTTP to HTTPS — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a certificate that expires on a Sunday. The certificate chain breaks for a hardware store.
We quoted a hardware store half what the other firm did because we did not propose features they did not ask for. The scope was HTTP to HTTPS, not a rebrand.
Launch day for a hardware store is usually light. Week three is when leftover tags, fonts, and staging URLs show up. a certificate that expires on a Sunday is the usual passenger.
The hosting bill for a hardware store is twelve dollars a month. Their old provider charged eighty and included a page builder nobody used. HTTP to HTTPS was broken on both plans.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add HTTP to HTTPS with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
For a hardware store, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for HTTP to HTTPS.
WordPress can handle HTTP to HTTPS with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.
