Managing office hours at a dental office
20 Aug 2024
How a dental office deals with office hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a robots.txt that disallows the blog. The office hours data is out of sync for a dental office.
The most expensive outage for a dental office was not a hack — it was a robots.txt that disallows the blog. Nobody attacked anything. The config just drifted.
We moved office hours for a dental office to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.
The chain of trust for office hours starts at the registrar. If the registrar account uses an email nobody reads, every downstream fix is temporary.
WordPress can handle office hours with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.
We solved office hours for a dental office by moving it behind a reverse proxy. The old configuration stayed live as a fallback for forty-eight hours, then we pulled it.
When a dental office asked for a quote on office hours, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.
A phishing page copying a dental office appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that office hours was set up correctly on the real site.
