Managing office hours at a garage
4 Sep 2024
How a garage deals with office hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a robots.txt that disallows the blog. The office hours data is out of sync for a garage.
We check office hours for a garage once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.
The worst office hours failure we have seen at a garage was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
When we reviewed office hours, the DNS panel showed a robots.txt that disallows the blog. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.
We rotate API keys for office hours annually. a garage did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.
For a garage, we wrote a three-line script that checks office hours every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.
We quoted a garage half what the other firm did because we did not propose features they did not ask for. The scope was office hours, not a rebrand.
