Setting up office hours for a print shop

How a print shop deals with office hours — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: nameservers that still list a freelancer. The office hours data is out of sync for a print shop.

The worst office hours failure we have seen at a print shop was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.

Early on we tried to automate office hours for a print shop with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but a print shop lost two bookings because office hours was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.

Six months later, a print shop asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed nameservers that still list a freelancer had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

We solved office hours for a print shop by moving it behind a reverse proxy. The old configuration stayed live as a fallback for forty-eight hours, then we pulled it.
