office hours: a field note from a photo studio

How a photo studio deals with office hours — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a mailbox that still points at the old host. The office hours data is out of sync for a photo studio.

We deployed a fix for office hours at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

We hand over a one-page document after every office hours job. It says what was changed, what the login is, and what to check if something feels wrong. a photo studio keeps it in a drawer they actually open.

Most providers let you export office hours as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.

Six months later, a photo studio asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a mailbox that still points at the old host had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

If the hours on Google disagree with the site, people trust Google and then arrive angry. office hours will not fix that. The hours page will.

A form that collects data for a photo studio should say where the message goes. Nine fields and a captcha on a quiet Tuesday will cost you the person who actually wanted to pay.
