Setting up page weight for a plumber

17 Mar 2026

How a plumber deals with page weight — and what usually goes wrong.

Request plumber.com HTML document Total weight a staging URL left… Other assets all resources Render visible page

The problem: a staging URL left in the sitemap. page weight slows the page for a plumber.

Fixing page weight cost less than the lunch meeting where a plumber decided to wait another quarter. Waiting is never free.

We document page weight in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a plumber can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

The worst page weight failure we have seen at a plumber was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.

When a plumber moved hosts, the outage was not the new box — it was a staging URL left in the sitemap. We keep TTL short the week of a move, then raise it once everything is stable.

DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to a plumber that the TTL on the old page weight record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.
