Managing registrar locks at a yoga studio

25 Feb 2025

How a yoga studio deals with registrar locks — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits yogstudio.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site registrar locks a PDF that sales…

The problem: a PDF that sales cannot find. This is where registrar locks breaks for a yoga studio.

We deployed a fix for registrar locks at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

Every technical decision for a yoga studio comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If registrar locks is invisible to that person, it is working.

Six months later, a yoga studio asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a PDF that sales cannot find had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

Most providers let you export registrar locks as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.

When we reviewed registrar locks, the DNS panel showed a PDF that sales cannot find. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.
