Managing robots.txt at a marina
6 Mar 2026
How a marina deals with robots.txt — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a plugin login nobody has used since March. This breaks robots.txt for a marina.
Instead of migrating robots.txt all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.
a marina asked us to look at robots.txt after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.
Automate robots.txt if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a plugin login nobody has used since March is what happens when nobody does either.
After fixing robots.txt, we added a monitoring alert. If the record changes or the certificate approaches expiry, both we and a marina get an email. No surprises.
Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a marina has not had downtime since we took over robots.txt. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.
