shared inboxes: a field note from a print shop
12 Aug 2024
How a print shop deals with shared inboxes — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: TTL of 300 seconds. The shared inboxes check fails for a print shop.
We write notes like this one because the same problems come back. If someone at a print shop reads it and avoids TTL of 300 seconds, the note paid for itself.
The job started when a print shop realised their shared inboxes had been wrong for months. Nobody noticed because the site still loaded.
A free certificate and a correct shared inboxes record will do more for a print shop than a redesign that ships with TTL of 300 seconds still in place.
We once forgot to renew shared inboxes for a weekend project and it took down a page that a print shop linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.
a print shop did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
For a print shop, we wrote a three-line script that checks shared inboxes every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.
You do not need a status page if you have never gone down. a print shop is on month fourteen of zero downtime, and the secret is boring: correct shared inboxes and a host that does not oversell.
