The problem: a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot. This breaks 404 pages for a walk-in clinic.

For a walk-in clinic, we wrote a three-line script that checks 404 pages every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.

DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to a walk-in clinic that the TTL on the old 404 pages record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.

A form that collects data for a walk-in clinic should say where the message goes. Nine fields and a captcha on a quiet Tuesday will cost you the person who actually wanted to pay.

When a walk-in clinic asked for a quote on 404 pages, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.

Automate 404 pages if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot is what happens when nobody does either.

a walk-in clinic did not want to hear about 404 pages. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot today.
