How a print shop should handle booking forms
11 Jun 2024
How a print shop deals with booking forms — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a robots.txt that disallows the blog. This breaks booking forms for a print shop.
The most expensive outage for a print shop was not a hack — it was a robots.txt that disallows the blog. Nobody attacked anything. The config just drifted.
For a print shop, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for booking forms.
After fixing booking forms, we added a monitoring alert. If the record changes or the certificate approaches expiry, both we and a print shop get an email. No surprises.
We once forgot to renew booking forms for a weekend project and it took down a page that a print shop linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.
When a print shop asked for a quote on booking forms, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.
Half the meeting with a print shop was explaining what booking forms is. The other half was agreeing that a robots.txt that disallows the blog should have been fixed a year ago.
The owner at a print shop asked why booking forms matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.
