What a dental office needs to know about certificate renewals

1 Mar 2026

How a dental office deals with certificate renewals — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot. The certificate chain breaks for a dental office.

We solved certificate renewals for a dental office by moving it behind a reverse proxy. The old configuration stayed live as a fallback for forty-eight hours, then we pulled it.

We deployed a fix for certificate renewals at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

For a dental office, we wrote a three-line script that checks certificate renewals every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.

The worst certificate renewals failure we have seen at a dental office was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.

Six months later, a dental office asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

Early on we tried to automate certificate renewals for a dental office with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

a dental office asked us to look at certificate renewals after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.
