What an accountant needs to know about certificate renewals
17 Feb 2024
How an accountant deals with certificate renewals — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a registrar login nobody wrote down. The certificate chain breaks for an accountant.
We once forgot to renew certificate renewals for a weekend project and it took down a page that an accountant linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.
For an accountant, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for certificate renewals.
We check certificate renewals for an accountant once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.
When we reviewed certificate renewals, the DNS panel showed a registrar login nobody wrote down. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.
We deployed a fix for certificate renewals at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.
We billed an accountant two hours for certificate renewals. The previous agency billed forty hours and left a registrar login nobody wrote down behind. Complexity is not expertise.
