Why DMARC matters for a plumber

2 May 2024

How a plumber deals with DMARC — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup DMARC DMARC a tag manager… Mail server plumber.com Inbox delivered

The problem: a tag manager container with leftover pixels. The DMARC check fails for a plumber.

We rotate API keys for DMARC annually. a plumber did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.

A friend of the owner at a plumber had set up DMARC years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.

Half the meeting with a plumber was explaining what DMARC is. The other half was agreeing that a tag manager container with leftover pixels should have been fixed a year ago.

When a plumber asked for a quote on DMARC, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.

The owner at a plumber asked why DMARC matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.

We solved DMARC for a plumber by moving it behind a reverse proxy. The old configuration stayed live as a fallback for forty-eight hours, then we pulled it.
