Why MX records matters for a language school

26 Jun 2024

How a language school deals with MX records — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup MX records MX records a parked domain with… Mail server language-school… Inbox delivered

The problem: a parked domain with only a logo. The MX records check fails for a language school.

Nobody at a language school could remember who had configured MX records. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

We told a language school that a parked domain with only a logo was a ticking clock. They agreed to fix it the same week — which is rare. Most clients wait until it actually detonates.

Test MX records from outside your network before you call it done. Your office Wi-Fi might cache the old answer for another six hours.

Two-factor on the registrar account is the single highest-value thing we do for a language school when managing MX records. Everything else can be rebuilt; a stolen domain cannot.

a language school asked us to look at MX records after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.

Before you touch MX records, take a screenshot of the current state. Half of our emergency calls come from people who cannot remember what was there before the change.

Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a language school had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct MX records.
