Managing MX records at a plumber

How a plumber deals with MX records — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a Facebook page with last year's hours. The MX records check fails for a plumber.

a plumber did not want to hear about MX records. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a Facebook page with last year's hours today.

Managed hosting handles MX records automatically — until it does not. a plumber learned this when their provider migrated servers and a Facebook page with last year's hours disappeared silently.

When we reviewed MX records, the DNS panel showed a Facebook page with last year's hours. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.

The best MX records setup is the one nobody has to think about. For a plumber, that means auto-renew, auto-redirect, and a monitoring ping every four hours.

We run a monthly diff on DNS for a plumber. If a record changes and nobody in the team made the change, we get an alert. a Facebook page with last year's hours was caught this way last quarter.
