Managing MX records at a garage

How a garage deals with MX records — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a contact form with nine fields. The MX records check fails for a garage.

We underestimated how long MX records migration would take for a garage. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because a contact form with nine fields had never been documented.

We got a call from a garage on a Friday. Their MX records had expired overnight, and the booking page was returning errors to every visitor.

We quoted a garage half what the other firm did because we did not propose features they did not ask for. The scope was MX records, not a rebrand.

We do not start with a platform when handling MX records. We write down who types what, who gets the mail, and what must not get lost. That list is always shorter than a vendor pitch deck.

Related work on this site follows the same principle: one job, a real inbox, no theatre. a garage did not need four analytics dashboards to know that Tuesdays are slow.

Managed hosting handles MX records automatically — until it does not. a garage learned this when their provider migrated servers and a contact form with nine fields disappeared silently.

We have seen agencies charge a garage for a yearly MX records audit that consists of a screenshot and a paragraph. Ours is a working config file they can apply themselves.
