MX records for a hardware store

Half the meeting with a hardware store was explaining what MX records is. The other half was agreeing that a contact form with nine fields should have been fixed a year ago.

a hardware store did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.

We document MX records in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a hardware store can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

After the move, a contact form with nine fields broke search indexing for a hardware store. Google kept serving the old pages for another nineteen days.

Crawlers and people want the same thing from MX records: one URL, a title that matches the heading, and a next link that goes somewhere real.

For a hardware store, we wrote a three-line script that checks MX records every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.
