Why MX records matters for a small hotel

How a small hotel deals with MX records — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a contact form with nine fields. The MX records check fails for a small hotel.

Early on we tried to automate MX records for a small hotel with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

For a small hotel, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for MX records.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a small hotel has not had downtime since we took over MX records. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

Most of the damage we see in MX records comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

Every technical decision for a small hotel comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If MX records is invisible to that person, it is working.

a small hotel did not want to hear about MX records. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a contact form with nine fields today.
