nameservers: a field note from a driving school

How a driving school deals with nameservers — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a form that emails a shared inbox. This is where nameservers breaks for a driving school.

Related work on this site follows the same principle: one job, a real inbox, no theatre. a driving school did not need four analytics dashboards to know that Tuesdays are slow.

Automate nameservers if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a form that emails a shared inbox is what happens when nobody does either.

Every technical decision for a driving school comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If nameservers is invisible to that person, it is working.

The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add nameservers with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.

For a driving school, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for nameservers.
