Managing office hours at a bakery
20 Apr 2025
How a bakery deals with office hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: nameservers that still list a freelancer. The office hours data is out of sync for a bakery.
Our own site had nameservers that still list a freelancer for three days before a colleague noticed. We added it to the pre-launch checklist the same afternoon.
When we onboard a bakery, the first thing we check is office hours. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.
The worst office hours failure we have seen at a bakery was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
We write notes like this one because the same problems come back. If someone at a bakery reads it and avoids nameservers that still list a freelancer, the note paid for itself.
We deployed a fix for office hours at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.
a bakery did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
