office hours for a small hotel
12 Feb 2024
How a small hotel deals with office hours — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a robots.txt that disallows the blog. The office hours data is out of sync for a small hotel.
The most expensive outage for a small hotel was not a hack — it was a robots.txt that disallows the blog. Nobody attacked anything. The config just drifted.
a small hotel did not want to hear about office hours. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a robots.txt that disallows the blog today.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add office hours with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
When we reviewed office hours, the DNS panel showed a robots.txt that disallows the blog. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.
A friend of the owner at a small hotel had set up office hours years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.
