What a photo studio needs to know about page weight

6 Mar 2024

How a photo studio deals with page weight — and what usually goes wrong.

Request photo-studio.… HTML document Total weight a staging URL left… Other assets all resources Render visible page

The problem: a staging URL left in the sitemap. page weight slows the page for a photo studio.

Nobody at a photo studio could remember who had configured page weight. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

For a photo studio, we wrote a three-line script that checks page weight every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.

WordPress can handle page weight with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.

We check page weight for a photo studio once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.

The owner at a photo studio asked why page weight matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.

Most providers let you export page weight as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.

There is a difference between a site that loads and a site that works. page weight is part of the second category for a photo studio.
