How a florist deals with TLS certificates — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a form that emails a shared inbox. The certificate chain breaks for a florist.

A friend of the owner at a florist had set up TLS certificates years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.

Every technical decision for a florist comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If TLS certificates is invisible to that person, it is working.

Launch day for a florist is usually light. Week three is when leftover tags, fonts, and staging URLs show up. a form that emails a shared inbox is the usual passenger.

When we onboard a florist, the first thing we check is TLS certificates. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.

Nobody at a florist could remember who had configured TLS certificates. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

We checked the WHOIS for a florist and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing TLS certificates.
