Why www redirects matters for a plumber

24 Dec 2025

How a plumber deals with www redirects — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits plumber.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site www redirects a robots.txt that…

The problem: a robots.txt that disallows the blog. This is where www redirects breaks for a plumber.

Instead of migrating www redirects all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.

DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to a plumber that the TTL on the old www redirects record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.

Automate www redirects if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a robots.txt that disallows the blog is what happens when nobody does either.

a plumber did not want to hear about www redirects. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a robots.txt that disallows the blog today.

Most of the damage we see in www redirects comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

The chain of trust for www redirects starts at the registrar. If the registrar account uses an email nobody reads, every downstream fix is temporary.
