How a yoga studio should handle www redirects
9 Dec 2024
How a yoga studio deals with www redirects — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a robots.txt that disallows the blog. This is where www redirects breaks for a yoga studio.
Test www redirects from outside your network before you call it done. Your office Wi-Fi might cache the old answer for another six hours.
We document www redirects in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a yoga studio can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.
For a yoga studio, we wrote a three-line script that checks www redirects every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.
Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a yoga studio had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct www redirects.
We solved www redirects for a yoga studio by moving it behind a reverse proxy. The old configuration stayed live as a fallback for forty-eight hours, then we pulled it.
We underestimated how long www redirects migration would take for a yoga studio. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because a robots.txt that disallows the blog had never been documented.
Most providers let you export www redirects as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.
