www redirects for cabin rentals
29 Feb 2024
How cabin rentals deals with www redirects — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a mailbox that still points at the old host. This is where www redirects breaks for cabin rentals.
Most providers let you export www redirects as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.
We document www redirects in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but cabin rentals can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.
DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to cabin rentals that the TTL on the old www redirects record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.
Instead of migrating www redirects all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.
cabin rentals did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
A phishing page copying cabin rentals appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that www redirects was set up correctly on the real site.
Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but cabin rentals lost two bookings because www redirects was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.
