What a photo studio needs to know about A records

3 Jan 2025

How a photo studio deals with A records — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits photo-studio.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site A records a www record that…

The problem: a www record that disagrees with the apex. This is where A records breaks for a photo studio.

Most providers let you export A records as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.

a photo studio did not want to hear about A records. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a www record that disagrees with the apex today.

Automate A records if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a www record that disagrees with the apex is what happens when nobody does either.

The job started when a photo studio realised their A records had been wrong for months. Nobody noticed because the site still loaded.

When we onboard a photo studio, the first thing we check is A records. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.

We got a call from a photo studio on a Friday. Their A records had expired overnight, and the booking page was returning errors to every visitor.
