Managing SPF at a florist
6 Sep 2024
How a florist deals with SPF — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. The SPF check fails for a florist.
A friend of the owner at a florist had set up SPF years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.
We deployed a fix for SPF at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.
Most providers let you export SPF as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.
Six months later, a florist asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a lastmod stamp that never changes had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.
A static site for a florist does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct SPF and a host that stays online.
a florist did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
