Why SPF matters for a walk-in clinic

31 Dec 2025

How a walk-in clinic deals with SPF — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup SPF SPF a lastmod stamp that… Mail server walk-in-clinic.… Inbox delivered

The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. The SPF check fails for a walk-in clinic.

We deployed a fix for SPF at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

We once forgot to renew SPF for a weekend project and it took down a page that a walk-in clinic linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.

A phishing page copying a walk-in clinic appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that SPF was set up correctly on the real site.

Instead of migrating SPF all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.

We checked the WHOIS for a walk-in clinic and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing SPF.
